Romans 9:1-17

  1. In verses 1-3, to what length does Paul’s love for the Israelite people extend? Do you think this is right, wrong, or neutral? Is there any way that you can relate with Paul?
  2. Paul then explains the blessings and privileges that have been given to the physical descendants of Israel. This “should have” led to their redemption in Christ. Why didn’t it? Does this reflect a failure on God’s part? Why, or why not?
  3. Branching out from verse 8, what is the promise, and how does a person become a child of the promise?
  4. There are two Old Testament stories about brothers referenced in this passage. Which brothers are they, and how does verse 12a ring true in each story?
  5. Explain the answer given to the question in verse 14. Does it seem like a satisfactory answer to you? Why, or why not?
  6. In light of all the context, why does Paul bring up Pharaoh? What point does he make in bringing him up?
