Colossians 3:5-11

Please pray for understanding and answer the following questions.

  1. The Scripture uses the terms “crucify” (suffocate) and “put to death” in defining how we ought to remove sin in our lives. What practical ways can we apply these phrases?
  2. These sinful practices are described as belonging to our worldly nature. What encouragement does that offer us? Galatians 5:16
  3. Verse 7 says “you once walked in these things.” If these sins didn’t effect the Colossian believers anymore, Paul would not have needed to write about them. Is there a contradiction in those two statements?
  4. There is a list of sins in verse 5 and a separate list in 8. Why do you think there’s a separation?
  5. What connection do you think the command “Don’t lie to one another” in verse 9 has with the earlier verses about ridding our lives of sin.
  6. What do you think the phrase “renewed in knowledge” in verse 10 means?
  7. What do you think the purpose of verse 11 is in the context of the rest of this paragraph?
